Some Good Pulp Doggoes

Hello and Happy (Canadian) Thanksgiving.

Here are two Very Good Doggoes (are there any other kind?) for my 1930s pulp project, The Rockies Ablaze.   These good puppers are from Bob Murch’s Pulp Figures range of Yukon Adventure figures.

My wife Joy has had two Siberian huskies in her life, both sadly gone across the Rainbow Bridge, but our house is replete with pictures, which I used as inspiration.   Joy holds that huskies are the most beautiful animals that God ever made, and I am inclined to agree with her.

Of course, Mounties need husky sidekicks.  Maybe not Constable Benton Fraser from the TV series of the 1990s, Due South, but perhaps his grandfather.

“Let’s go, Fang, there’s trouble out there!"

Sadly our house no longer has a resident dog.  Our very good girl Dinah came to the end of her road last week.   Joy adopted her three years ago after her owner passed away.  Dinah was already elderly then, and while she got deaf and started losing her sight, she had a good life until recently  when her ability to walk and keep clean declined, and we decided to let her end her life in peace and dignity.  I suspect the only dogs here in future will be miniature dogs, as we hope to travel once Covid is over, but you never know.

Blessings to your brushes and to your furry friends!

  1. Sorry to hear about your dog. We've gotten our last 3 dogs by adoption. including one who may have been 20 when she passed.

    1. Thanks John. Twenty years is a good age for a dog. I am sure I am least 20 in dog years most days.
If we ever did get another, it would be another rescue pup.

  2. Great work on the little huskies and sorry to read about your loss - that's the only downside of pets......

    1. Thanks, and agreed. Pets need to be loved in their time, and that time is often short. Mind you, there are still three cats terrorizing our house ...

  4. I am sorry for your loss, each one is their own self but some make an especially large place in one's heart.

Beautiful work on your little huskies!

(Ps Mind you, after 30 years as parttime unpaid conscript at boarding kennel and grooming shop, I have to say that there are a rare few dogs that do not qualify as "good"...there are even a few, a very few, where the terms "ornery" and "downright evil" come unbidden to mind...they're probably good at home though.)

    1. Thank you kindly Ross. I am sure you know a lot about the metaphysics and ethics of dogs, if anyone does.
We had an interesting theological question at church on St. Francis Sunday recently, which needs blessing more, dogs, or cats? Cats by a wide margin, it seems.

  5. Sorry to hear about Dinah Padre, we lost our old Boy in May and his sister is now very old. It just left a huge dog-shaped space in my heart. I'm glad to hear you are thinking of others, we're looking out for puppies for ourselves.

And I would contend that in the most beautiful animal stakes, there are Labradors..

    1. Thanks Doug and so sorry to hear, I hope you find a puppy soon.
I am prepared to concede that a golden lab would be just as fine as any husky out there.

  7. That's a shame Padre the house is definitely empty without Man's best friend, we lost our 12 year lab at the beginning of lockdown, just not quite the same...
Nice mini's let's hope they do you proud on the table top...
    All the best.

  10. *Now* I can say "Grandma, what big teeth you have!"
More fine beasts (and master this time).
Sorry to hear about the loss of Dinah. They are with us for such a short time, but in our hearts forever.
    Regards, James

  13. Lovely looking pair of Huskies and mounties! I'd forgotten about due South! Sorry for your loss, unfortunately goes with the territory. My daughter who is doing her A levels next summer (maybe?) has ended up with a 22 year old cat which I sincerely hope will last beyond her examinations,he seems like he can go on forever but we all know that is unfortunately impossible!
    Best Iain
