First We Take Berlin (Tuesday Night Wargame)

As mentioned a while ago here, I’ve had a hankering to play an old SPI game, Berlin ’85, a Jim Dunnigan design that appeared in Strategy and Tactics Magazine in 1980.

Here you can see the initial setup, from the first of three scenarios, Operation Unity, which assumes a USSR attack on an unreinforced West Berlin garrison with minimal warning.

The USSR has three Russian and one Easy German divisions massed to attack, plus the 103rd Guards Airborne Division is ready and may make a play for the city centre.   How long can NATO hold?  We’ll see.

  1. Never played this one but played SPI's Central Front series in the early '80s. Enjoyed BAOR the most from the Central Front series. Have you tried that series?

    1. Hi Jonathan:
I did play GDW's WW3 operation games but never played any of the SPI titles you mentioned. I did however play an SPI game called World War 3 that had a nuclear option that could end the game automatically with a loss for both sides. My younger brother and I nuked the world quite a few times.
A lot of the SPI games are being reworked and reissued by Decision Games, I should check them out to see if the Central Front titles are back.

    1. It's not going to end well for NATO, I'm sure. If they were smart they'd surrender right off the bat, but that's not going to happen.

  3. Looks like an interesting set up- I have a soft spot for the old magazine games. Will look to add that one to my collection.

That and I'm rather partial to cold war gaming at the moment due to playing lots on the PC....

    Cheers,

    Pete.

  4. I used to get all the S&T games back in the 80s. While modern (as it was then) is not my period I believe I played this game (probably still have it). I certainly did play BAOR which I think maybe had similar mechanics. SPI had a string of games using a system that they first published with Fulda Gap (don't quote me as I'm probably wrong). Have fun. I have a boardgame starting tomorrow.

  5. "Easy Germans"? Time will tell.
I remember this game being new and exciting - and of course set in the far future! My sympathies lie with the British Berlin Brigade - not least on account of their whacky AFV camo scheme.
