I don't know Freeman's book, but I will look for it. I've always liked Harvey Hill, he was a quiet and reliable general, moody sometimes but not a showboat or a diva - exactly the sort of fellow you'd want for a job like South Mountain. You're quite right, it's sobering to imagine how he felt, looking down at the AoP piling up against him like the incoming tide, and wondering how long he could hold. A great example of leadership and courage to be sure.Mad Padrehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00410143683610813671noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6519665561624985779.post-43907301996784359872014-10-28T05:11:25.584-07:002014-10-28T05:11:25.584-07:00Hey Joanathan. I've never seen the original 1981 game - I believe it was included in one of the last S&Ts that SPI published. It would be a great collector's item, but I suspect you'll have more fun with the GMT treatment. I don't know much about that battle - was that where Banks got his Confederate nickname of Comissary Banks?<br />Mad Padrehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00410143683610813671noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6519665561624985779.post-68291641114222542952014-10-28T05:06:52.754-07:002014-10-28T05:06:52.754-07:00How dismal. I thought, too that he covered the events leading up to the Antietam battle very well, too. But there is quite a good account of the South Mountain battles in Southall Freeman's 'Lee's Lieutenants' (a two-volume set I recommend highly if you can get hold of it). Apparently Harvey Hill never felt the loneliness of command quite as acutely as he did facing almost the whole of the Army of the Potomac coming towards him.Archduke Piccolohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15533325665451889661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6519665561624985779.post-70440266698431382532014-10-27T18:32:09.467-07:002014-10-27T18:32:09.467-07:00Michael! Looking forward to discovering the differences between the 1981 original and the latest incarnation. I wonder if I will recognize it? Sadly here you are more likely to be able to buy a book about flower fairies or a lavender bag than a learned tome of military history.Diplomatisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04154642903216207181noreply@blogger.com
