I have one unit carrying the 69th NY as part of the Irish Bde, and flags for two more of that Brigade. My Confederates are mostly generic, though I have one carrying flags for one of Hood's Texan regimets (I forget which) and several carrying Mississippi flags since my wife is from that state.
I do have some of the Perry Brothers infantry which I'm painting in largely black slouch hats to represent a generic western Union regiment, but I need to think about what flags would be appropriate for it.
Mad Padrehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00410143683610813671noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6519665561624985779.post-58948608494153098652013-01-09T15:11:44.030-08:002013-01-09T15:11:44.030-08:00Thank you Rodger! I confess you know more about the Iron Brigade than I do, in that, until your post, I didn't know that there were two Iron Brigades, an eastern and western. Perhaps I knew that once from reading Catton's history of the AoP and forgot, I dunno. I think the Western Black Hatters are the more well known, and certainly what this figures are trying to capture. It would be interesting to debate as to what troop quality they would deserve, depending on the battle, year of the war, accumulated experience and casualties, etc.Mad Padrehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00410143683610813671noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6519665561624985779.post-82475338592163585382013-01-09T14:59:59.658-08:002013-01-09T14:59:59.658-08:00Thanks Ray! Seems very apt, then!

Having a vague idea there was another, less well known, 'Iron Brigade'.Looking it up showed it wasn't in another theatre, but in the Army of the Potomac also. I don't think they were distinguished by black hats, but it was an older I.B. Commanded by J.P.Hatch, it comprised 2nd US Sharpshooters, and 22nd, 24th, 30th and 84th New York Vols. During the 2nd Manassas Campaign, Hatch's Iron Brigade was the 1st Bde of King's Division; Gibbon's 'Black Hat' Brigade was the 4th Bde of the same Division! The 'Black Hats' got their sobriquet at the Antietam battle, the correspondent awarding it not being aware of the existence of the other Iron Brigade.

After Gettysburg, the 'Iron Brigade of the West' was never the same, having taken enormous losses on the first day. The earlier Iron Brigade had been disbanded in May '63. All the same, it is amusing to think you could legitimately field two Iron Brigades in a wargames Army of the Potomac...

Cheers,
IonArchduke Piccolohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15533325665451889661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6519665561624985779.post-71608385615312594502013-01-04T12:07:05.465-08:002013-01-04T12:07:05.465-08:00Beautiful figures, gotta love the explosions!!!!Beautiful figures, gotta love the explosions!!!!Ray Rousellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07352596392520905197noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6519665561624985779.post-24516686903164074102013-01-04T09:06:16.110-08:002013-01-04T09:06:16.110-08:00I like the explosion, consider that idea well and ...I like the explosion, consider that idea well and truly stolen.
