I have to admit that the subject matter isn't one that especially engages me (I'm more likely to invade Russia than Russia is to invade the Baltic States - but I would like to visit Lake Baikal some day...). Having said that, and looking at the game inventory you have shown, it strikes me that you could design a better game out of it all.

What seems to be lacking is any alternative to capturing cities. I would have thought that (the) invading Russians would tend to mask the cities (apart from air attacks of communications node points) and keep pushing westward as hard as they could to discombobulate any coordination by NATO and local national forces.

I am reminded of a war game narrated by one of the participants who had taken the Russian/Soviet role. It was one of those 'multi-player' games in which the respective teams discussed their plans before the action started. This guy recommended going for a breakthrough on a very narrow front. The breakthrough, when achieved, created a gap in the NATO defence line precisely the width of a single road. The Russians brought enough pressure on the flanks to keep NATO from gathering the wherewithal to close the gap.

In poured the breakthrough column, straight up the road ... and kept on going. The NATO command never recovered. The road remained open, rear echelon and reserves forced found themselves directly engaged well behind what was supposed to be the front line, and the whole defensive front descended into chaos. As far as NATO high command was concerned, the smog of war descended with a resounding thud over the entire front.

I think a game that features Russia vs anyone - I discover that there are Russia vs China (Putin vs the Dragon) and Russia vs Finland (Putin's Northern War) versions of the game - ought to be designed to encourage the Russian player to 'reinforce success'. The opposing player would be forced to find countermeasures to such an approach. Certainly the premium for the Russians is speed and timing, to give the West too much to think about.

I reckon, for the sake of fairness, there ought to be a game 'Trump's Dropshot 2.0', a modern revisiting of the 1950s plan by the US to attack the Soviet Union. But that's just my sense of humour...
Cheers,
IonArchduke Piccolohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15533325665451889661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6519665561624985779.post-54423760394660564152019-05-08T08:29:05.619-07:002019-05-08T08:29:05.619-07:00Excellent review, Padre! Perhaps, Lion of Ethiopia had potential but it has been so long ago, I have forgotten.Jonathan Freitaghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07862373894196924886noreply@blogger.com
